Alfredo Vilchis - Mexico City, 1960.

alfredo vilchis miniA self-taught artist, from a young age Alfredo Vilchis put his natural talent for drawing to good use, exploring several artistic avenues before finally focusing on traditional Mexican votive offerings. To date, he has amassed a collection of some 500 votive offerings, antique and contemporary, and has produced another 4,000 of his own.

In the naïf style commonly associated with the votive offering, Vilchis assumes the role of an anthropological artist of sorts, depicting what he sees on the streets of Mexico City and portraying mass Mexican culture in general. His work is listed and appreciated by collectors and museums the world over, and was recently exhibited at the Louvre in Paris.
