Zegache-Talleres Comunitarios

zegacheRestorer Georgina Saldaña Wonchee has been running these community workshops since they were founded in 2000 at the initiative of the artist Rodolfo Morales. In 2004, they received funding from the Alfredo Harp Helú Foundation to restore an altarpiece depicting Our Lady of El Carmen and in 2006 the Rockefeller Foundation came on board, putting up resources for the restoration of an altarpiece of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the making of 100 reproductions of 18th-century mirrors. The project has created jobs for 12 young people from the local community, who are currently learning the craft of woodcarving, the application of gold leaf and restoration techniques.
