Alfredo Vilchis portrays passages from the history of the Mexican Revolution and continues the tradition of painting altarpieces, which he uses to recount the tribulations of soldiers and camp followers, and the requests and miracles granted by heavenly beings, like the Virgin of Guadalupe. One of his greatest contributions to the history of art in Mexico has been to revive the tradition of the self-taught altarpiece painter or "artist of the people", as Vilchis calls himself.
