These reassessments of universal myths –the concept behind this exhibition by Javier Cruz– lead me to conclude that the artist is never ready for death, that his dialogue with matter and his technical preparation are a mere dress-rehearsal for the moment when he will necessarily have to face total annihilation, when it will be only his oeuvre that remains to battle it out for permanence. Reassessing, I would like to think, after toying with the dictionary, is nothing more than surrendering to the arduous task of taking stock of everything, of opening oneself up to the possibility of always painting for the first time. Reassessing as the act of never growing old.
